Welcome to the page all about me!
First off, I’m not going to tell you my name.
I’ve kept this blog anonymous, and like Joey when he shut Chandler in the box, my reasons are threefold:
To start with, this is the internet after all. And sooner or later I’m bound to say something stupid which I’ll later regret. Hopefully by keeping my identity private, I’ll manage not to put off any future employers, or embarrass my mother.
Secondly, I post fiction I’ve written here. I’m a bit self conscious about this kind of thing, and most of my friends don’t know that I write. I don’t mean things to stay this way forever, but in the meantime I’d prefer not to be outed as a wannabe writer by someone stumbling across my blog.
Lastly, anonymity helps me to be honest with what I write. I don’t know if anyone else has this problem, but I find that if I’m writing something knowing that people I know will read it, I tend to write from the perspective of the person I want them to think I am, rather than from my own point of view. I also occasionally use people I know as the basis for characters in my stories…
But as the Bard himself said, what’s in a name? Knowing my name wouldn’t tell you anything about me (unless you already know me), and there are plenty of more important things you need to know if we’re going to be friends. I mean we’ve only been acquainted a few minutes and you already know that I like Friends and am pretentious enough to quote Shakespeare at you on the first meeting. Put another way, I’m pretty sure you already know whether or not you’re going to stick around.
If you’re still on the fence, here’s the most condensed version of ‘me’ that I can manage:
I’m British. I’m quiet. If we shared a tube carriage, you wouldn’t notice me. Unless I was having a particularly bad hair day. I have really crazy hair.
I like chocolate. A lot. Actually, I like all the foods. Except the ones containing raw fish, which I don’t really understand.
I find it very hard to stay in one place. I’ve been living in London for the past year, which is the longest I’ve stayed anywhere since I graduated from university. I love life on the road (well mostly it’s been on the wing).
I love ideas, and people with ideas. The most important quality I look for in the people around me is curiosity about the world around them. I want everybody to ask more questions, try more things, visit more places and connect with as many different types of person as possible. We’re all in this together and together is the only way that we can make it work.
Oh, you should also know that I have a pretty dark sense of humour. But I think that we have to be able to laugh at ourselves and the mess we make of things, so I don’t feel too bad about it.
Well, that’s me by me. I hope you’ve decided to stay, and if so, please make yourself at home and enjoy having a look around.
